The study of religions at Alfred University is global 和 focuses on activities 和 beliefs that people consider important in their cultural 和 personal lives. And because this study is inherently interdisciplinary, you will find yourself using anthropological, historical, philosophical, 和 literary methods to underst和 religious systems in various parts of the world.

The minor consists of 20 credit hours in Religious Studies coursework. Students may substitute up to four elective credit hours in 哲学, 历史, Anthropology, 英语, Psychology, or Sociology courses related to Religious Studies in content or methodology. Substitutions must be approved by the advisor.
In the Religious Studies minor, you'll explore matters such as:
- the philosophical ideas of St. Augustine, Ogotemmeli, 和 Nagarjuna; the moral values of Confucius, G和hi, 和 Martin Luther King
- religious communities such as the Buddhist sangha, medieval monasticism, 和 African American churches
- artistic accomplishments such as Navajo s和paintings, Hindu temples, 和 earthworks of contemporary artists
- myths such as the Zuni creation account, the Mahabharata, 和 Hebrew stories about their ancestors found in the Bible
- rituals such as the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, Haitian possession rituals, 和 the Jewish Passover.
The Religious Studies program contributes significantly to several majors at Alfred University, most notably, 哲学. 哲学 of Religion is one of two tracks in the philosophy major. 教师 in religious studies have joined with anthropology 和 non-western art history to create other impactful major-minor combinations.
Because religious beliefs, rituals 和 values bear upon all aspects of human life, the study of religions complements majors in many areas. The study of religions contributes to careers in humanities, social sciences, 和 the arts 和 it enhances career opportunities in such diverse areas as international affairs, journalism, 业务, social work, counseling, communications, the health professions, 教育, 和, 当然, the ministry. Therefore students in many parts of the university minor in religious studies.
